Our services include: Community support programs, employment, housing and volunteer services. Our community thrift store, The Clothes Line, offers gently recycled clothing and household goods and provides support to families and individuals in need.

CONTACT serves as the Housing Resource Centre for the South Simcoe catchment area in the County of Simcoe. Our agency provides assistance to people at risk of experiencing homelessness, as well as those experiencing homelessness, along with assistance accessing energy support programs.

We are looking to hire a full-time Housing Access Worker to assist individuals and families to obtain affordable accommodation and relevant support services; to identify individuals with chronic housing needs requiring longer term assistance; to assist clients in identifying their housing needs, programs they qualify for, complete application forms, and submit applications as directed; to provide regular follow-up and casework to clients, assisting them in completing program requirements.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Housing Access Worker (HAW) will work one-on-one with clients (both individuals and families) who are at risk of experiencing homelessness, or who are currently experiencing homelessness. The HAW works directly with the client (either in person, by phone or video-call) to facilitate access to financial supports, including first and last month’s rent, energy assistance programs (OESP, LEAP), and rental subsidies. The HAW will also provide peripheral case management supports to assist with basic life skills, such as financial management and planning, and is responsible for active community referrals based on the needs of the individual client. It is expected that the HAW will be knowledgeable of Housing First principles and will work collaboratively to provide appropriate referrals within the community and the Housing team. The HAW is responsible for responding to immediate housing crisis situations that arise on occasion, either over the phone or at our BWG and Alliston office locations. This response involves
providing adequate information to the client and facilitating access to emergency financial supports to address these situations. The HAW at CONTACT also plays an active role in community advocacy related to homelessness and their work feeds into greater efforts to raise awareness and supports for persons experiencing homelessness in the South Simcoe catchment area. The HAW is also responsible for working with the Executive team to develop relevant departmental materials and contribute to the planning and development of affordable housing.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to): • Maintaining a caseload of individuals and families who require assistance in obtaining and maintaining adequate housing; • Meeting with clients in their preferred location (remotely or BWG or Alliston offices); • Advocating to landlords on behalf of clients requiring housing, as needed and with the support of the Housing Specialist; • Facilitating information sharing workshops and sessions, as assigned by the Housing Manager; • Providing training in budgeting, household management, social skills, and other skills necessary to maintain adequate housing; • Being familiar with the Landlord-Tenant Act, Ontario WORKS, Ontario Disability legislation and other related legislation and regulations and assisting clients accordingly; • Assessing housing needs and assisting clients in securing housing to meet those needs; • Facilitating access to other community supports to address basic needs and housing set-up, including: food, clothing, furniture and transportation assistance, as well as other agencies and health services; • Assisting clients in accessing assistance programs including OW and ODSP, utility funds, trusteeship programs, and specialty funds such as the Housing Retention Program; • Attend all relevant community events and meetings linked to homelessness or housing issues, as agreed upon with the Housing Manager and/or Executive Director; • Maintain participant records in accordance with applicable standards and regulations, funding requirements, etc. • Participate in continuing education activities, remaining knowledgeable in area(s) of expertise through training benefits and self-motivation; • Participate and contribute to the staff team through active participation in staff meetings, retreats, debriefing and program events. 

 SUPERVISION: The Housing Access Worker (HAW) will report directly to the Housing Services Manager, and work closely with other members of the agency. The HAW may be in positions where they are the sole representative of CONTACT Community Services at various community events as a spokesperson. Therefore, sound judgment and professionalism must be exhibited at all times in consultation with the Housing Services Manager and the Executive Director. Organizational Support: As a charity, our organization relies on fundraising activities and events. We encourage all staff to volunteer at our events/activities.

Qualifications:

• Preference will be given to applicants with a degree/diploma in the field of social services and who have recent relevant experience working with the target population; • A minimum of one-year experience in promoting housing for marginalized persons; experience within the Addictions, Mental Health or a closely related field is an asset; • Familiarity with the communities of South Simcoe and the social services landscape;
• Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation, recovery principles and harm reduction philosophy; • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of Housing First; • Ability to engage sound judgment and strong problem-solving skills; excellent written and verbal communication, with administrative and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize tasks; • Strong interpersonal skills with the proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team; • Demonstrated knowledge of human/legal rights and relevant legislation; • Knowledge of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit culture is considered an asset; • Positive personality and demonstrated ability to take initiative and exhibit extra effort to better serve the client; • Strong analytic skills; with the proven ability to make appropriate decisions; • Valid First Aid certification; • Mental Health First Aid; • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training; • Valid G Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle
